Anna, you're definitely right that every government has the right and responsibility to adhere to the interests of its constituents. No solution to climate change is quick, but aligning with leaders who make decisions *today* is an essential component to creating and maintaining a movement that will change the world for good.

Noone is perfect--mayors included. Mayor Daley is doing what needs to be done to make the City of Chicago one of the best cities to live in. Look at all the wonderful programming--the Taste of Chicago, the numerous festivals and public films--the city of Chicago has.

Let's think of solutions rather than problems! We can only start to address these serious issues together, Anna!

Best wishes,
Erica

Mayor Daley is a fan of anything that will get him large numbers of supporters on the pretense that he approves of and champions their cause. Of course I'm not saying that in his heart of hearts he doesn't believe in what you're doing. He might. All's I'm saying is: don't be a cheap mark when it comes to your political loyalties.

I really appreciate your response, both here and the longer message you sent offline, and it does assuage my concerns. It's amazing to me that it is so hard to find businesses that want to be a partner on this. Extra shoppers, free publicity, energy efficiency improvements that will save money on energy bills over the long-term. I wonder what it is that they see as a downside.

I hope that the Fox & Obel event will be able to serve as an example that will help encourage more Carrotmobbing in Chicago and will bring it out to the working class neighborhoods and the small corner stores. Maybe it could be the next "Critical Mass" happening pseudo-spontaneously at a different store in a different neighborhood every month. (Hey, if you're going to dream, dream big, right?)

We're excited about it, too! This carrotmob is being organized in conjunction with the Academy of Management conference downtown, and in order to facilitate that partnership we reached out to businesses that were in proximity of the event.

Our team is looking forward to replicating or supporting other mobs around Chicago into the future - but we do have to say that upscale companies have problems tackling their energy consumption too! We were conscious about selecting an independently owned business, none of whom are flush with cash right now.

In the end success means a significant reduction in annual energy consumption downtown and a statement - loud and clear - that Chicago consumers care and will reward companies who do more than just sell us fancy stuff.

I was so excited to hear Carrotmob was coming to Chicago. And then...this. A high-end, gourmet grocery store in Streeterville. A place that could probably raise the price on fancy cheese a nickel and pay for it themselves. I think it ought to be done in a corner store in a working class neighborhood, taking the energy efficiency message to a more diverse clientele instead of pinning it to the 'white environmental elite' with this choice. Fox & Obel doesn't need any help from us. What is the point of helping the rich save money? Where is the societal impact? Or is Carrotmob in Chicago trying to be "trickle-down" instead of "bottom-up"?
